Revealed: DH knew vulnerable patients at risk from cuts
Chemist and Druggist, Annabelle Collins, 27 March 2017
The Department of Health (DH) acknowledged in an unpublished impact assessment that pharmacy closures will have a “greater detrimental effect” on patients with “protected characteristics”. According to a 38-page report – released internally in October 2016 and revealed during the High Court hearing last week – the DH also said “there may be a disproportionate effect on deprived communities were any closures to occur”. It said that patients with protected characteristics – “who rely to a greater extent on pharmaceutical services” – would be impacted the most if any pharmacies close.
