RPS, FIP write to world leaders to express solidarity, pharmacy’s commitment to tacking climate crisis
Pharmacy Business, Editorial Staff, 1 November 2021

Pharmacy Business reports that the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has joined the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in a letter to world leaders at COP26, expressing pharmacy’s commitment to tacking the climate crisis. The letter outlines initiatives the profession can deliver as part of its contribution to the climate change crisis.

The RPS said: “Climate change is one of the greatest threats to global health in the 21st century, and the healthcare industry – being responsible for 4-5 per cent of greenhouse emissions globally – has an important role to play in battling climate change.”

RPS president Claire Anderson also stated: “This is a pivotal moment in the fight against climate change and as a society we stand with FIP to champion pharmacy’s role in creating sustainable healthcare”.

Open consultation: Original pack dispensing and supply of medicines containing sodium valproate

The Government has opened a public consultation on proposals to allow pharmacists to dispense prescription medicines in original packaging, in particular those containing sodium valproate.

The aims of the proposals behind enabling OPD and whole pack dispensing of medicines containing sodium valproate, are to support increased patient safety by ensuring patients receive the necessary information that is included in the original manufacturer’s packaging about the safe and effective use of a product. A further aim, for OPD, as part of England’s Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework (CPCF) 5-year deal, is to support efficiencies for pharmacies; to free up pharmacists and their teams for other tasks such as providing clinical services to patients.

The consultation closes at 11:45am on 13 December 2021.

Plans to introduce original pack dispensing in pharmacies, as a safety and efficiency measure are out for consultation.

The consultation, initially in England only, also seeks to introduce requirements to ensure medicines that contain sodium valproate are always dispensed in the original manufacturer’s packaging.

Measures to increase use of OPD include introducing the flexibility for pharmacists to dispense up to 10 per cent more or less than the prescribed quantity, where clinically appropriate. The proposal does not extend to formulation or strength, nor to controlled drugs.

The move to OPD will also create efficiencies in hub and spoke dispensing, as well as improve patient safety, the consultation notes.

The consultation closes on 13 December 2021.

RPS, FIP write to world leaders to express solidarity, pharmacy’s commitment to tacking climate crisis
Pharmacy Business, Editorial Staff, 1 November 2021

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society has joined the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in writing a letter to world leaders who have gathered in Glasgow to attend the COP26 summit, expressing pharmacy’s commitment to tacking the climate crisis.

The letter signed by RPS and FIP officials has been sent to heads of state and national delegations. It outlines initiatives the profession can deliver as part of its contribution to the climate change crisis.

In a press release issued today (November 21) the RPS said: “Climate change is one of the greatest threats to global health in the 21st century, and the healthcare industry – being responsible for 4-5 per cent of greenhouse emissions globally – has an important role to play in battling climate change.

“Being medicines experts, pharmacists can protect the environment by continuing to support people to stay well and through reducing medicines waste, tackling air and water pollution, and implementing green pharmacy practices.

“As well as our Declaration of Climate and Ecological Emergency, we have released sustainability policies to show what pharmacy can do in relation to climate action and sustainable healthcare.

RPS president Claire Anderson said: “This is a pivotal moment in the fight against climate change and as a society we stand with FIP to champion pharmacy’s role in creating sustainable healthcare.

“With COP26 underway, this is a perfect time to inspire pharmacists to protect the environment and think about all areas that we can do better.”
