Pharmacies to take central role in UK autumn vaccine boosters
Financial Times, Jasmine Cameron-Chileshe, Oliver Barnes and Sarah Neville, 15 August 2021

The Financial Times reports that pharmacies will play a key role in the UK’s autumn Covid-19 vaccination booster programme.

The article suggests that the enhanced role of pharmacies will help support the NHS and reduce hospital vaccine services to clear an urgent backlog in medical treatments and prevent increasing waiting lists.

Alastair Buxton, Director of NHS Services at the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee said around 700 pharmacies are currently involved in the immunisation programme and “there are estimates that we could see around 1,700 or 2,000 pharmacies [sign up].”

Senior health service representatives expect that many hospital vaccination centres will close and vaccinate only staff and social care workers.

Professor Adam Finn, JCVI member, said: “We need to review evidence as to whether people who receive vaccines early on in the programme are in any serious risk of getting serious disease and whether the protection they’ve got from those first two doses is still strong,”

Additionally, Andrew Lane, Chair of the National Pharmacy Association highlighted the importance of an uninterrupted supply of the vaccines to ensure success of the programme.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) stated that: “The government is preparing for a booster programme and the independent JCVI has published its interim advice on who to prioritise for a third vaccine from September 2021.”
